Extra gardai will be on duty over the bank holiday weekend in an effort to combat drink driving and excessive speed.
Four people were killed over the August bank holiday last year and there were 384 arrests for drink driving.
Speed is the single greatest contributory factor to road deaths with alcohol coming a close second. Drivers are being urged to drive within the speed limit, to nominate a non-drinking driver to bring them home or to use public transport or taxis
165 people have been killed on Irish roads so far this year.
