A variety of drugs with a total value of €24.4 million were discovered on an Irish-registered truck which was stopped on the Belgian border with France at the weekend.

Police uncovered 35 kilogrammes of heroin with a street value of more than €11 million when the vehicle was searched at a motorway service station close to the border on Saturday.

Also found were 590,000 Ecstasy tablets valued at €9 million, 120 kilogrammes of amphetamines with a street value of €3 million and 149 kilogrammes of cannabis, worth €1.4million.

Belgian police believe the drugs, which had come from Amsterdam, Holland, were being transported by Irish drug traffickers for sale in Ireland.

The driver of the truck has still to be traced.
