A man in his 40s was killed instantly today when he was crushed by a digger during construction work on the Cork main drainage scheme in the Skehard Road area of the city.

It is understood the digger toppled over during pipe laying, crushing the man. Emergency services were quickly at the scene where the victim was pronounced dead. The Health and Safety Authority and local gardaí are carrying out separate investigations.

A separate garda investigation is continuing in Cork into an accident at a quarry during which two men in their 20s were injured, one seriously, in the early hours of the morning.

The pair are believed to have fallen over 60 feet from the top of Beaumont Quarry in Ballintemple, and according to gardaí, were from the locality. The two men were taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital, where the condition of one of them remains critical.
