Gardaí will step up their activities on the State's road network from tonight as part of its bank holiday road-safety crackdown.

The Garda Press Office said enforcement would be "visible on all road networks with particular emphasis on collision prone locations. Numerous checkpoints will be conducted in all Garda divisions."

The campaign will begin at midnight tonight and will run until midnight on Monday next.

The will particularly focus on drink and drug driving, speeding, the non-wearing of seatbelts. Motorcyclists and pedestrian visibility will also be a particular emphasis, gardaí said.

Last year five people died and 67 were injured on the State's roads over the Easter weekend.

A total of 89 people have died on the State's roads since the start of the year, an increase of four on the same period last year.
