Gardaí have named the two elderly men killed in separate road traffic accidents in Co Cork and Co Meath yesterday.

Peter Looney (88) from Sleaveen East, Macroom, Co Cork was killed when the van he was driving collided with a car near his home.

The accident happened at 9.45am. Mr Looney was taken to Cork University Hospital where he died at 2pm. The driver of the car was not injured. Gardaí at Macroom have appealed for witnesses to call them at 026-20590.

In Co Meath, 72-year-old James O'Byrne from Lucie Place, Passage West, Co Cork died following an accident in Piercetown, Dunboyne, at 1pm.

He was fatally injured when the car in which he was a passenger was involved in a collision with a lorry. He was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown in Dublin where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car is being treated for serious injuries. Gardaí at Dunboyne are investigating the incident.
