Gardaí have identified the hackney driver found dead in a field in Co Clare on Saturday afternoon as Liam Moloney (61).

Gardaí have identified the hackney driver found dead in a field in Co Clare on Saturday afternoon as Liam Moloney (61).

Mr Moloney's remains were found dumped behind a tree by the side of an avenue that leads to Port House, a private property near the village of Ruan, around six kilometres from Ennis.

Gardaí believe Mr Moloney, who was found with his throat slit, may have been killed in a botched robbery.

No weapon was found where the body or car were discovered.

Gardaí have issued an appeal to talk to anyone who saw a wine-coloured Mazda 626, registration number 97 D 49218 on the road between Ennis and Porte, Ruan, between 7.10 p.m. and 9.50 p.m. last Friday night.

They are also keen to talk to anyone who was in the vicinity of Ennis Cabs, the Market, between 6 p.m. and 7.15 p.m. on Friday and anyone who saw a vehicle being parked at the entrance to Porte House between 7.10 p.m. and 9.50 p.m. the same evening.
