A spokeswoman for Limerick University has confirmed they are treating as "very serious" reports that a student was forced at knife-point to drive two men wearing masks to Dublin airport.

Gardaí in Limerick confirmed yesterday that a complaint has been received about a kidnapping incident, which is alleged to have taken place on the University of Limerick campus last Monday. A first-year student claims two men forced him to drive them to Dublin after threatening him at knife-point.

It is understood the UL student was in his own car on the campus when he was approached by two men wearing Barney the Dinosaur masks. It is alleged the kidnappers paid their victim €500 to cover the cost of the journey.

It was confirmed yesterday that a formal statement has been taken at Henry Street Garda station about the alleged abduction.
