Gardaí in Cork have launched an investigation after a 20-year-old man was stabbed in the arm and struck on the head with a hammer in a late-night attack.

The serious assault took place in the Mardyke area of the city near University College Cork at about 10.30pm on Friday.

The victim was set about by five men who got out of a grey van. It is understood the victim knew his attackers.

The injured man, who is from Togher in Cork, was drinking in a field next to the Mardyke with a female companion when the attack occurred. The woman was unharmed in the incident.

Gardaí spoke to a number of men believed to have been involved in the incident but no arrests were made.

The man is being treated in Cork University Hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening. Gardaí spoke to the man briefly after the attack but further interviews occurred over the weekend. Gardaí are investigating if the incident is linked to an altercation on August 7th when the victim was attacked by a group of men on Farranferris Avenue in the north side of Cork city.
