Gardaí were last night treating as suspicious the discovery of the body of a young woman hidden in undergrowth in field on the outskirt of Cobh and have requested the services of the State Pathologist's Office to carry out a postmortem examination.

Over 20 gardaí had been involved in a search for the past two days for local 19-year-old girl Sheola Keaney when they made the grim discovery at Newtown near Cobh Pirates' rugby pitch at around 8.30pm yesterday evening.

Ms Keaney, from Glenanaar, Cobh, is believed to have been missing since Friday and gardai discovered a woman's partially clothed body covered with some sheeting in undergrowth off a laneway at the back of the rugby pitch yesterday evening.

Insp Martin Dorney said they were still awaiting official confirmation of the identity of the dead woman.
