Gardaí begin inquiry into death of baby

GARDAÍ HAVE begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of an infant in Co Sligo

GARDAÍ HAVE begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of an infant in Co Sligo. The baby girl was pronounced dead at Sligo General Hospital at about 1.30pm yesterday. The seven-week-old was taken to the hospital on Monday morning, where she received treatment for head injuries.

A Garda spokesman said the assistance of the State Pathologist’s office had been requested and that a postmortem examination was expected to take place at Sligo General Hospital tomorrow.

A house in Cranmore, an estate on the east side of Sligo town, has been sealed off in connection with the investigation. It is to be examined by a Garda technical team today. The spokesman said the results of the postmortem were likely to determine what line of inquiry the investigation followed.
