Gardaí have arrested four people as part of their investigation into the murder of a 23-year-old man in Sligo last December.

The three men and a woman, all from the Sligo area - are being held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Gardaí arrested three men, aged 19, 21 and 57, and one woman, who is in her 50s, in Sligo as part of the ongoing investigation into the death of Sam Smith.

Two of those arrested were being questioned at Sligo Garda station last night and two at Manorhamilton station in County Leitrim.

They can be held for an initial period of 24 hours which can be extended for a futher 48 hours.

Mr Smith was shot at point-blank range when he answered a call to his front door late on December 30, 2005.

The 23-year-old was shot in the arm and stomach at his home at Carroll Drive in the Cranmore area of Sligo. He underwent emergency surgery but died hours later.
