National Football League
Division 1 Semi-final
Galway 2-12Sligo 0-11
The tribesmen of Galway advanced to the final of the NFL today with a convincing win over fellow Connacht hopefuls, Sligo.
In wet and windy conditions, both sides took their time to settle, and as a result their was little scoreboard activity in the opening exchanges.
Galway got their noses in front early on when after 16 minutes, they were awarded a penalty courtesy of a clumsy attempted block by Sligo ‘keeper Peter Walsh. Derek Savage stepped up and slotted the ball into the back of the net to give John O’Mahony’s men the early advantage.
Sligo battled back however, and they were unlucky not to be leading at the break after some fine scores from Dessie Sloyane and Paul Taylor saw them lead by0-7 to 1-1 with three minutes to go to half-time.
But Galway would not lie down, and a after a flurry of late first half scores, the two sides went into the break all square.
The second half was a completely different story and Galway were simply too strong for a fading Sligo side.
Impressive work from, in particular Michael Donnellan, and a second goal from captain Padraig Joyce saw off the Sligo threat, and Galway ran out comfortable winners in the end.
They now await the winners of another all-Connacht clash tomorrow between Mayo and Roscommon.
