Funerals held in Kilkenny for mother and daughters

A mother and her two daughters who died in a house fire in Co Kilkenny on Christmas morning were buried today.

Funerals were held for Sharon Whelan (30) and her daughters, seven-year-old Zsara and two-year-old Nadia, in the village of Windgap, near Callan.

Hundreds of mourners, including young schoolchildren, lined the road to St Nicholas Church as family members carried the coffins.

Ms Whelan and her daughters died in a blaze at their rented isolated farmhouse on a country lane on Christmas morning. Their bodies were found by family members at about 9am.

A private Rosary was held at Molloy's funeral home in Callan last night. The removal from Molloy's and funeral Mass took place this morning, with burial afterwards at the cemetery adjoining St Nicholas Church.

Gardai are still investigating the circumstances and the possibility that Ms Whelan was already dead when the fire was started.
