Some 1,000 troops and police stood guard yesterday at the politically charged funeral of a self-confessed warlord shot dead eight days ago.

The funeral of Sifiso Nkabinde in the KwaZulu-Natal town of Richmond proceeded peacefully. After Mr Nkabinde's coffin was lowered into the ground, supporters fired handguns into the air.

Mr Nkabinde was secretary-general of the United Democratic Movement, which he joined following his 1997 expulsion from the ANC. His burial followed that of seven ANC supporters in Richmond on Saturday, who were among 11 people massacred hours after Mr Nkabinde's assassination.
