There was a large attendance at St Murdeach's Cathedral in Ballina, Co Mayo, for the funeral Mass yesterday of Dr Aubrey de Vere Bourke, father of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and former president, Mrs Mary Robinson.
Dr Bourke (87) died on Tuesday in Mayo General Hospital after a short illness. He had been retired as a GP for some years and lived in the family home in Ballina.
Father Enda McDonagh, Professor of Theology at Maynooth University, and a close friend of Mrs Robinson, was the chief celebrant.
