JAKARTA - An uneasy calm yesterday returned to two towns in Indonesia's remote Irian Jaya province after hundreds of Papuans rioted for two days. PT Freeport Indonesia, one of the world's biggest copper and gold miners, restarted a major mountain mill after a 48 hour closure.
Residents said there were unofficial reports that three people had been killed on Tuesday. Indonesian security forces, increased because of the unrest, patrolled streets in the lowland town of Timika and in Tembagapura.
