London - The British human rights activist released less than two months into a seven-year jail sentence in Burma flew home to the UK yesterday and announced she would be returning to Burma.

Ms Rachel Goldwyn (28), from south-west London, said she would go back to work on a "research project" on Burma's counter-narcotics measures. She had persuaded the government that she wished to help the poorest people and could do independent research if released.

Refusing to criticise the authorities - a condition of her release - she said: "I am still committed to democracy but am now going to take on a dialogue role rather than a confrontational role." She denied she would be working hand in glove with the regime.

Ms Goldwyn, a London School of Economics graduate, was jailed in September after chaining herself to a lamp-post in Rangoon and singing a song opposing the junta.
