France to host World bridge championships

The World bridge championships will take place in Lille, France, from August 21st to September 3rd

The World bridge championships will take place in Lille, France, from August 21st to September 3rd. The programme is - mixed pairs, August 21st-23rd; knockout open, and women's teams, August 24th-September 1st; open, and women's pairs, August 29thSeptember 4th; junior teams, pairs, individual, August 24th28th; senior Swiss teams, August 27th-30th; senior pairs, August 31st-September 3rd; imp pairs, September 2nd-3rd. All intending participants must be entered by the Irish Bridge Union before June 30th.

The all-Ireland team championship (Egan Trophy) at Newcastle, Co Down, was won by P. O Briain, T. Roche, R. Milne, and B. O'Brien with 78 points. Runners-up were: I. Lindsay, M. Rosenberg, D. Greenwood, and A.T.R. Anderson with 76. Third: T.G. Mackenzie, Dr H. Campbell, Dr S.Hall, and I. Hamilton, 58.

Throughout the summer open pairs will be run, Monday to Friday (7.45 p.m.), at the Galway Bridge Centre. The Tralee festival, scheduled for June 26th-28th, will not take place.
