PARIS - Bells tolled in France's 40,000 churches yesterday when the nation mourned seven French monks, murdered by their Algerian Muslim kidnappers.

The monks were abducted two months ago from their monastery near Medea south of Algiers. A statement was issued in the name of Algeria's Armed Islamic Group (GIA), saying the monks' throats had been cut last Tuesday after Paris refused to negotiate a release of prisoners.
