A former GAA official was sent for trial to the Circuit Criminal Court yesterday on charges of sexually abusing children.

The 69-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Ballybay District Court, Co Monaghan, on 75 charges of sex abuse involving 11 girls and boys aged between seven and 15 years, between 1958 and 1978.

The case had been adjourned several times pending a judicial review in the High Court. At yesterday's sitting, Judge Flann Brennan was told by Mr Roger McGinley, solicitor for the accused, that the High Court application had been disposed of.

Judge Brennan remanded the man on personal bail of £5,000 to the Circuit Criminal Court in Monaghan on January 11th.
