Peter Ford has stepped down as Sligo senior football manager following the weekend defeat to Donegal in the All-Ireland qualifying series.

He had been in the position for three years after succeeding Mickey Moran in August 2000.

The Sligo county board are due to meet next week although it could be some time before a new manager is appointed.

Ford led Sligo to the All-Ireland quarter-finals last year but the county failed to capitalise on that breakthrough this season.

After a comfortable opening-round win over London in Ruislip, Ford's men slumped to Mayo in the Connacht semi-final before bowing out against Donegal yesterday.
