There is massive disruption in parts of Dublin, Kildare and Meath this evening as flooded roads have reduced traffic on some of the country's busiest roads to a crawl.
And with Met Eireann predicting more flooding for this evening and overnight, further difficulties for drivers tomorrow are almost inevitable.
Bus Eireann says delays of over two hours are being experienced on its services out of Dublin. Parts of Dublin city centre are clogged by traffic held up by rush-hour congestion creating bottle-necks on the outskirts of the city.
The north and northwest of the city are particularly bad with reports of journeys to Dublin's satellite towns in Wicklow, Kildare, Louth and Meath taking up to 5 hours.
The north quays have been closed after a wall at Bridgewater Quay near Conyngham Road collapsed. Parts of Ballinteer, Inchicore, Kilmainham and Ballyfermot and north Dublin suburbs are the worst affected with a number of roads closed by flooding.
Premises in Temple Bar were flooded today and St Stephen's Green was virtually impassable this afternoon.
The N3 carriageway to Cavan near Blanchardstown is reduced to one lane and the junction at Dunboyne has what one witness described "has a lake on the road".
Motorists on the M4 motorway are advised to take extreme care as are reported in several parts are reported.
The fire brigade has been stretched to its limit throughout the day and is still working Dublin Corporation this evening attempting to drain roads of surface water.
Earlier today it was called to take 30 children from a school in Swords, Co Dublin after it was flooded and access was to parents was prevented by the water.
Rail services have also experienced disruption with the routes from Dublin to Rosslare and Sligo experiencing delays this evening. The DART service between Howth Junction and Malahide has been cancelled.
Arklow and Wexford town have also experienced flooding though and while roads have been reopened flooding is still making driving hazardous.
