The British Exchequer has gained £1.1 million in fishery fines as a result of evidence given by the Naval Service during patrols in Irish waters, Lorna Siggins, Marine Correspondent, reports.
The sum of £1.1 million was levied yesterday in respect of 80 cases with an Irish involvement, taken against 13 fishing vessels owned by 12 British companies. The cases related mainly to flagships exceeding their quotas in the Irish Exclusive Fishery Limit (EFL).
The 80 cases were part of a total of 104 addressed this week by Judge Martin Stevens in Haverfordwest Crown Court, Milford Haven, south Wales. The cases were taken on foot of statements provided by the Naval Service to the British fishery authorities, on request.
