Fermoy has rid its town lamp posts of the burden of carrying politicians' images by declaring itself an election-poster-free zone.

A number of groups in the Cork town, including the Fermoy Image Improvement Campaign, were tired of the litter and unsightly nature of the posters and decided to lobby political parties to stop posters from being put up.

Fermoy recently finished fourth in a recent poll on litter, proving to be the last straw for the local people.

"Fermoy is intolerant of litter," said Mr Brendan O’Gorman of Fermoy County Council. "The decision was taken on behalf of a number of local groups".
