A man who escaped from a prison bus with another man after threatening prison officers with a syringe has had 18 months added to his current four-year robbery sentence. Sean Coyne (25), Kilmartin Green, Tallaght, Dublin, was heard shouting "Stab the bastard, stab the bastard" before demanding prison officers remove their handcuffs.

He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to attempting to escape from lawful custody, inciting another person to cause serious harm and producing a syringe intending to intimidate on November 26th, 1999.

Coyne had 19 previous convictions while the other man had four. Gardai arrived just as the

two men escaped from the prison bus at Templeogue Bridge. Coyne waved the syringe saying, "Come on and I'll give it to you". Mr Michael O'Higgins SC, defending, said Coyne came from a respectable family and was in trouble due to drug involvement.
