A former soldier who served with the first Army battalion to go to Lebanon in 1978 has claimed in the High Court he suffers from a post-traumatic stress disorder due to his experiences there.

Mr Christopher Knowles (45) was "one of the best soldiers in his platoon" when he was selected to travel to Lebanon in June 1978. Within days of arriving there, he was hospitalised with reactive depression and now has a "very serious and probably permanent psychiatric condition", Mr Alan Mahon SC, for Mr Knowles, said.

The case continues today.
