A former London Metropolitan police officer has been arrested and charged today in connection with one of the State's largest drug seizures.

Ex-detective sergeant Michael Daly (49) of no fixed abode, was charged with conspiracy to supply 1,554 kilos of cocaine, police in England said.

The drugs haul, which had an estimated street value of €400 million, was seized off the coast of Dunlough Bay, Co Cork in July 2007.

Mr Daly was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Blackfriars Crown Court or the Old Bailey on August 7th.

Two other men have also been charged in connection with the seizure.

John Gary Edney (57) from East Hill, South Darenth, Kent, and Alan Roger Wells (55) from Blenheim Road, Sidcup, Kent, were arrested and charged on July 23rd.

Both men appeared at Highbury Magistrates' Court on Friday and were remanded in custody to appear at Blackfriars Crown Court or the Old Bailey on August 11th.
