A man killed in a road accident yesterday was a prominent Galway GAA figure. Mr Tom Callanan died when the car he was driving was involved in a head on collision with another car near Kilmeen Cross, east of Loughrea on the main Dublin Road.

Mr Callanan, who was in his 60s, had been chairman of the Galway county hurling board for more than 17 years.

All Co Galway GAA matches have been called off this weekend as a mark of respect with the exception of the Connacht Football Championship match between Galway and Sligo.

Five other people were injured in the crash and taken to Portiuncula hospital in Ballinasloe. They included Mr Callanan's son, Dermot, and a French student, who had been staying with the family at their home at Boherduff, Loughrea the driver of the other car, Mr Peter Martin, of Seacrest, Knocknacarra, in Galway city, and his teenage son and daughter.
