Bratislava - About 180 European rabbis ended a four-day meeting yesterday which was dominated by Holocaust restitution demands but clouded by events in Austria, which the gathering boycotted after the far right's entry into power in Vienna.

The biennial Conference of European Rabbis heard a claim that the US recently declassified a document showing that $10 billion worth of assets were seized from Austrian Jews by Nazis and not returned. In Washington US officials denied that anything had been hidden.

Organisers of the conference moved the venue to the Slovakian capital after the entry into power of a coalition government comprising conservatives and Mr Jorg Haider's far-right Freedom Party last month.
