THE EU yesterday described the successful conclusion of Russia's presidential election as an historic milestone in the consolidation of democracy there.
In a statement issued in Dublin on behalf of the EU, Ireland, current holder of the presidency, said Mr Yeltsin's election victory would help to strengthen peace and stability in Europe and contribute to Russia's integration into the community of free, democratic nations.
It said the successful holding of the elections also reinforced EU determination to press on with the establishment of close relations with the Russian Federation.
"The European Union is ready to continue and intensify co-operation with the Russian authorities so as to build further on the democratic and economic reforms Russia has successfully initiated in recent years.
While recognising the challenge that the implementation of these reforms presents, the Union is convinced that they are essential for the future well being of the Russian people," the statement added.
. President Clinton spoke to Mr Yeltsin by telephone yesterday and said later in the White House that the Russian president joked and sounded "quite good" in spite of widespread concerns about his health.
