LUXEMBOURG - EU members agreed last night on new norms for "clean" fuels applicable from 2000 to reduce particles of sulphur and benzene harmful to health.

The petrol industry will be called upon to reduce the amount of sulphur in petrol to 150 particles per million (ppm), and that of benzene to 1.0 per cent. For diesel fuel, the limit for benzene was set at 350 ppm.
