A spokesman for the Spanish Embassy in the Venezuelan capital Caracas has reported that local authorities have detained an alleged member of the Basque separatist group ETA who is wanted in Spain.
The embassy press officer Eduardo Aguirre told reporters that a Spanish citizen, Mr Juan Victor Galarza Mendiola, "a member of ETA ... has been detained this morning".
He said Galarza was detained in the city of Maracay, west of Caracas, and was being held at the headquarters of Venezuela's DISIP security police in the capital.
There was no immediate comment on the arrest from Venezuelan authorities.
Spain is seeking the extradition from Venezuela of six other alleged members of ETA, which stands for Basque Homeland and Freedom in the Basque language. The six are not in custody.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said during a visit to Madrid earlier in May that any extradition decision would be taken by the country's Supreme Court. ETA is listed as a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union. It has claimed responsibility for 39 killings since January, 2000, when it resumed violence after an 18-month cease-fire.
