A Canadian Air Transat Boeing 757 jet aircraft with 221 passengers and a crew of eight flew for more than 600 miles over the Atlantic on one engine yesterday when the port engine failed.

It was on a direct flight to Toronto from Newcastle, England, when the problem developed and it had to turn back. A full-scale emergency was declared at Shannon Airport, where the aircraft made a safe single-engine landing and the emergency services were not required.
