Tony Blair cancelled a planned visit to Northern Ireland to meet Bill Clinton. Political sources say Blair did so at David Trimble's request. Trimble argued the British prime minister's planned love-fest with Clinton, one of the architects of the Belfast Agreement, might do more harm than good in the fraught electoral atmosphere in the North.
Campaigning in Northern Ireland is not without its hazards. Trimble was in Banbridge when a man held out his hand, apparently to shake the UUP leader's hand. Trimble responded to the gesture but the man then apparently tried to bend Trimble's thumb backwards. Security men dealt with the situation.
