A 75-year-old Co Kildare man has been jailed for seven years for raping his granddaughter between her second and 10th birthdays.
During his trial, the now 23-year-old victim told the jury at the Central Criminal Court that her father had raped her between her 11th and 13th birthdays and had been jailed for this abuse. Both men abused her at her father's Army accommodation.
The jury heard Garda Kathleen Miller say that when she and Det Garda Pat Donlon arrested the accused he at first denied he even knew his granddaughter. Det Garda Donlon said the victim's mother told her not to report her grandfather.
He pleaded not guilty to two charges of raping her between January 1st, 1982 and January 1st, 1985, and 16 charges of indecently assaulting her on dates from 1977 to 1985. He was given concurrent two-year sentences on the sex assault charges and cannot be named for legal reasons.
