Elderly couple assaulted in Antrim burglary

An elderly husband and wife were beaten by a gang during a burglary at their home in Co Antrim today.

The couple's terrifying ordeal began when the 70-year-old woman awoke to find three masked men standing in their bedroom at Hillhall Road, Lisburn.

Police said her husband, also 70, who recently suffered a stroke, then fell to the floor. He was ordered not to move by two of the men wielding a golf club and a steel bar . "When the woman tried to help she was struck across the temple with a broken brush shaft," a PSNI spokesman said.

She managed to get up and scream for help but was thrown back onto the bed. The intruders, who all spoke with southern Irish accents, then ransacked the house and escaped with a sum of cash.
