LONDON - A newspaper article on hatred written by columnist Bernard Levin resulted in a libel payout and a public apology in Britain's High Court yesterday.

Mr Levin and the Times were sued by 82 year old retired solicitor's clerk, Mr Hyman Berger, whose brother Maurice (76) had been given a 30 month suspended prison sentence for assaulting him.

Mr Justice French heard that the article, entitled "Deliver us from hatred", was published last April underneath a large cartoon depicting two old men in wheelchairs fighting each other with walking sticks in a graveyard.
