At least eight people have been killed after a Spanish inter-city train derailed in the northwest of the country, state radio has reported.

Officials for Spain's state rail company were not immediately available to comment on the report. The train was travelling from the capital Madrid when it derailed in Palencia region.

Six carriages came off the tracks near the station of Villada in the Palencia region as the train travelled between the Spanish city of Vigo and the town of Hendaye in France, said a police spokesman.

There was no immediate official comment on the cause of the crash.
