Q: I got 305 points but also failed maths. I was originally intending on doing arts in NUIM, but also have their kilkenny campus down. What are the chances of me getting either of these, and should I consider rechecking my maths for the points alone?

A:

Maths is not a requirement for many of the options in Arts in NUIM and NUIM Kilkenny so in terms of entry requirements you should be fine. In terms of points you have a strong chance certainly for Kilkenny.

Q: I failed Maths today and I got 240 points. If I do a PLC will there be any chance of me getting a Course in any College next year since I failed maths this year? I am just worried that if I do a PLC that I will still not be able to get a course because I failed maths.

My advice to you would be to do your PLC course and at the same time next year repeat your Maths as a single subject.   If you pass your Maths you will then be able to meet the entry requirements for any courses that require Maths.   This would certainly keep more options open for you in the future.

Q: I got 500 points. I wanted to do computer science in TCD but did not get the C1 required in the maths. I got a D1. My second choice is computer science in UCD what do you think of my chances? I will recheck the maths.

A:

Computer Science in UCD last year was 470 points and the Maths requirement is HD3 so given you have a HD1 and 500 points then you have a very good chance of getting an offer. It's a big jump from a D1 to a C1 in Maths for TCD in a recheck but it would be no harm to view your papers anyway.

A:
You have a few options here: you could repeat Maths next year as a single subject and then if you pass it you can combine this years LC and your pass in Maths from next year to meet the entry requirements for any CAO courses that require the pass in Maths, you could apply for a vast array of PLC courses - many of which do not a have a Maths requirement and use your results in these courses to eventually gain entry to CAO courses if you wish, there may be some courses in the Vacant Places section of the CAO which you can apply for which have no Maths requirement, some private colleges accept direct application to their courses (not throught the CAO) and some of these may not have a Maths requirement and finally some of the colleges in the CAO system have second chance opportunities for those who don't do so well in Maths, you should have a look at the college websites to see if these are applicable to you.
