THE introduction of film studies into the new Leaving Cert positive step, says Pat Larkin, chairperson of the Teachers' Association for Media Education.
But, he says, he would like to see the Junior Cert paper widened to include broadcast as well as print media. The whole question of media studies is vital to young people, he says.
Teachers concerned about the effects on violence on children and the ready accessibility of pornographic and violent images may wish to attend the seminar preceding the Teachers' Association for Media Education's AGM.
Patricia Long, of Buena Vista International, will speak about the effects of violent videos on children. John McMahon, educational programmes co-ordinator at RTE will tail about children and their relationship with television, both as consumers and participants.
The seminar is open to everyone, not just members of TAME. The seminar takes place in the Irish Film Centre, Dublin, on Saturday, January 20th, at 2 p.m. and will be followed by the AGM at 4 p.m.
Many teachers are not comfortable with media studies as it is a relatively new development. To this end, the association organises in-service courses.
