Next Monday 50 million teachers will take a bow when World Teachers' Day dawns around the world. UNESCO and Education International will mark the day with the publication of The Quiet Peacemakers - a Tribute to Teachers, a 20-page brochure describing the life of eight teachers.
One of those featured is Zohra T, who teaches in Algeria. "I'll stay with my pupils even if it costs me my life," she says. Almost every child in her class has a horror story to tell. "There is a plot to bring Algeria to its knees by terrorising the population. The children understand that they must meet this challenge, which is why they continue to brave danger and come to class."
The brochure is available free from the Global Action Programme on Education for All, UNESCO, 7 Place de Fontenoy, 75352 SP 07 Paris - fax (00331) 45 68 56 29 - or from Education International, 155 Boulevard Emile Jacqmain (8), 1210 Brussels, Belgium - fax (00322) 224 06 07.
