Transition Year students from Carlow, Longford and Galway picked up Agri-Aware awards in a recent prize-giving ceremony in Dublin.

The "Agri Detective Challenge" asked students to investigate ways of sustaining agriculture in their areas, and examine its strengths and weaknesses. At the finals last week, students gathered to exhibit their projects, comprising posters, videos, written papers and models. John McCullen, chairman of Agri Aware, complimented them on their work: "This is an excellent example of how urban and rural people work together to create outstanding projects," he said.

The winning school was St Mary's College, Knockbeg, Co Carlow, for a project on the effects of agriculture on the river Barrow. Moyne Community School, Co Longford, came second, and students from Holy Rosary College, Mountbellow, Co Galway, were presented with a special award for their project, "Save the Corncrake".
