JUNIOR CERT GERMAN AND HOME ECONOMICS HIGHER AND ORDINARY LEVEL:AN ERROR on yesterday's higher-level German paper left many students bewildered, but overall the paper was well received. The offending passage, in section E of the reading comprehension, gave two different figures for the number of beds in a youth hostel, then asked students to number the beds.

"In this case, because it was an error, the examiners will have to give marks to students who chose either figure, so there's no need to worry," said Martina O'Reilly, a teacher at the CBS High School in Clonmel.

The listening section was well received as students were given plenty of pauses in a 47-minute aural exam. The ordinary-level paper was generally applauded, with the exception of section G of the reading paper, which some teachers felt was difficult. In the afternoon, higher-level home economics students were given "a great opportunity to show off their knowledge", according to the ASTI's Amy Doyle.

Both the higher and ordinary-level papers were roundly welcomed. "There was a very good range of questions on both papers," said Ms Doyle. "There were no surprises." The written exam is worth 50 per cent of the grade at Junior Cert level. The rest is assessed through project and practical work.
