Dublin - A demonstration has been called for today in Dili, the capital of East Timor, in protest at apparent preparations for a final military solution to Timorese demands for self-determination in the former Portuguese colony, David Shanks writes.
Thousands of Indonesian combat troops have been arriving in recent weeks in spite of UN-supervised negotiations, which continued this week. Bishop Carlos Belo of Dili has said that troops withdrawn by ship (under the gaze of about 100 foreign journalists) had actually been landed on the western side of the island and trucked back to East Timor.
