Dublin's ethnic diversity will be celebrated in a month of music to be held across the capital's northside in a festival launched last night by Lord Mayor Paddy Burke.

The Northside Music Festival will be held at some of the city's lesser-known venues such as the Red Stables in St Anne's Park and the Plaza, Ballymun, and will feature music from eastern Europe and elsewhere.

The eastern European influence will be heard in performances by local groups such as the Jewish and Roma-influenced Northstrand Klezmer Band and the Slovak Festival Ensemble.

Other groups will include O'Mambo's Latin folk, and African music and performance from Hakuna Matata. Opera performances will be held at the Red Stables between 3-4pm on Sunday, August 19th (weather permitting), and at the civic offices on Wood Quay every Thursday in August between 1-2pm.
