There were delays in flights in and out of Dublin airport earlier today due to overnight radar technical problems.

According to a spokeswoman for the airport, there were delays of 45 minutes to an hour on flights and a restriction of 32 flights per hour.

Flight times are now returning to normal, however.

A number of Aer Lingus transatlantic flights were earlier delayed, as were flights by Aer Arann and Continental Airlines.

The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) said part of the radar system at the airport failed to work late last night for around 30 minutes. The IAA said it was not known what caused the fault but engineers were examining the equipment.

It was fully operational again this morning but restrictions were in place on the number of planes landing and taking off each hour to allow engineers to investigate.

“It is working away normally at the moment but in the interests of safety we decided to impose restrictions," an IAA spokeswoman said.

“Normally there would be about 50 aircraft operating in and out of the airport per hour. Now we’re operating 32 aircraft per hour.

The IAA advised passengers to check with their airlines for more information regarding flights in and out of Dublin.
