Miami - One of the world's largest drug firms has said it asked Washington to ease its embargo on Cuba so that the company can research a Cuban vaccine that might help to stamp out the disease meningitis B.

The State Department said it was considering the request by the pharmaceutical giant SmithKline Beecham for permission to test the vaccine in the United States. The virus strikes about 1,000 people a year in the US.
