Seven Irish athletes were eliminated from their respective disciplines at the World Championships in Edmonton last night.
Sarah Reilly, who looked in promising form to reach the Women’s 200 metre semi-final, finished sixth while the defending champion Inger Miller failed to reach the final after finishing fourth.
Olive Loughnane came 13th in the final of the Women’s 20 kilometre walk but Gillian O’Sullivan was disqualified in a race where Russian Olimpiada Ivanova led from the start to win in a time of one-hour 27.48 minutes.
Breda Denehy-Willis was 10th in the Women’s 5,000 metres while Una English was 18th in the first heat and Maria Cambridge finished 17th in the second heat.
Finally, James Nolan was eliminated in the first round heat of the Men’s 1500 metres after finishing 10th.
James Costin will take part in the 50 kilometre walk tomorrow while Terry McHugh competes in the Men’s Javelin, Teresa Duffy lines-up in the Women's marathon and Patrice Dockery starts in the Women's wheelchair 800 metres.
