The mother of SDLP leader and Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Mark Durkan has died after a long illness.

The mother of SDLP leader and Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister Mark Durkan has died after a long illness.

Mrs Isobel Durkan (79) died late last night at Foyle Hospice in her home city of Derry.

Mrs Durkan, who lived at Troy Park in the Culmore Road area, raised her young family alone after her husband Brendan, a police sergeant, was killed in a road accident. The youngest of the family, Mark, was just a few months old when his father died.

Mrs Durkan, whose funeral service will be held at St Eugene's Cathedral on Friday, is survived by her seven children - four sons and three daughters.
