The Government has appointed a new secretary general of the Department of Finance.
Kevin Cardiff, currently head of the Taxation and Financial Services division within the department, will take up his post at the end of the month, a statement said.
He replaces David Doyle, who is retiring.
Mr Cardiff joined the Department of the Public Service (DPS) in 1984 and the Department of Finance in 1987.
He has had a wide range of roles in the Department of Public Service and the Department of Finance, including in the human resources and industrial relations areas.
“Following a short stint on the Government bond dealing desk before the establishment of the National Treasury Management Agency, Mr Cardiff worked on monetary and exchange rate policy in the 1990s.
“Subsequently he worked on pensions policy and organisational issues, such as Freedom of Information and Standards in Public Office.”
Most recently he has been the head of Taxation and Financial Services division within the department.
“As the financial crisis developed over the past 18 months, Mr Cardiff was asked to concentrate solely on financial services matters. In this role, he has worked closely with the Minister [for Finance Brian Lenihan] in formulating the Government's response to the crisis,” the statement added.
Mr Cardiff is in his late 40s and is a graduate of the University of Washington and University College Dublin.
Mr Lenihan thanked David Doyle for his “long and dedicated service to the State” and for “his fine contribution to the public service”.
